Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an aqueous copolymer dispersion for coating excellent in stretchability, toughness, etc., of a paint film, by forming a shell copolymer having the lowest film-forming temperature higher than that of the core copolymer on the surface of a specified dispersed core copolymer particle. CONSTITUTION:7.5-30wt.% (meth)acrylonitrile (A) is emulsion-polymerized with 20-60wt.% vinyl monomer (B) which can give a homopolymer of a glass transition point <=60 deg.C, 30-70wt.% vinyl monomer (C) which can give a homopolymer of a glass transition point <60 deg.C and 0.5-10wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer (D). To the obtained aqueous core copolymer dispersion is added a mixture comprising 7.5-30wt.% component A, 22-62wt.% component B, 28-68wt.% component C and 0.5-10wt.% component D and emulsion-polymerized to form a shell copolymer having the lowest film-forming temperature higher by at least 5 deg.C than that of the core copolymer on the surface of the dispersed core copolymer particle. In this way, the title aqueous copolymer dispersion can be obtained.
