PURPOSE:To suppress hysteresis by specifying the product of the refractive index anisotropy of a liquid crystal and the thickness of a liquid crystal layer as well as the ratio of the thickness of the liquid crystal layer and the spiral pitch of the liquid crystal respectively to specific ranges. CONSTITUTION:The nematic liquid crystal 3 having positive dielectric anisotropy is held in place between a pair of electrode substrates 1 and 2 subjected to an orientation treatment to a 20-30 deg. range in the pretilt angle of molecular orientation. The liquid crystal 3 consists of the liquid crystal molecules 3a forming 260-280 deg. twist structure in the thickness direction thereof. Polarizing plates 4, 5 are disposed on the outside of the substrates 1, 2 in such a manner that the axis of polarization or the axis of absorption thereof attain the prescribed angle with the molecules 3a adjacent to the respective substrates 1, 2. The product DELTAn.d of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the liquid crystal 3 and the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer is set at 0.89-0.93mum and the ratio d/P of the thickness (d) and the spiral pitch P of the liquid crystal 3 at 0.67-0.71.
