Abstract
PURPOSE:To exactly prevent excessive wear and transition of a bimetal contact by connecting a shunting means such as a shunt resistor, which is used to shunt a heating current flowing in a main heater, in parallel with the main heater and next disposing a protection means in which a starting bimetal switch is held on a closed state. CONSTITUTION:A shunting means R3 such as a shunt resistor, which is used to shunt a current flowing a main heater H1 and to decrease it according as a surface temperature and a resistance value rise due to heat generation of a positive characteristic heat sensitive element PTC during a life time of a discharge lamp, is connected in parallel with the main heater H1 and next a starting bimetal switch SW1 is exactly held on a closed state. Repeated on- and-off operations of the starting bimetal switch SW1, occurring during the life time of the discharge lamp, can be exactly stopped by maintaining this closed state. Hence, excessive wear and transition of the bimetal contact can be exactly prevented, and so the starting bimetal switch SW1 can be made long-lived without much increase in the number of parts and in cost, and further a degree of freedom on designing a circuit can be improved.
