Abstract

PURPOSE: To avoid direct interception of outflow of molten metal and thereby to prolong the useful life of an opening-closing cover by providing a tap hole in the bottom of a molten metal vessel of a converter or the like and by providing a mechanism for cooling the upper-end opening part of the hole, together with the opening-closing cover for closing up the lower-end opening thereof. CONSTITUTION: Molten steel in a converter 1 is cast and, immediately before slag is discharged, a cooling medium 19 (e.g. hydrocarbon gas) is made to flow in from a piping 13c and to blow off into the converter 1 from a tuyere 13a through a tuyere pipe 13b. Then the temperature of slag lowers and a solidified part thereof is formed in an extent from the tuyere 13a over to the upper-end opening 12a of a casting hole 12. Thereby the part of the upper-end opening 12a is closed up and outflow of the slag is stopped. A nozzle stopper 17 being rotated thereafter, a nozzle plug 17c is fitted in a lower-end opening 12b and thereby the tap hole 12 is closed up. Since the outflow of the slag is not intercepted directly, the damage of the nozzle plug 17c is very small.
