Abstract

PURPOSE:To safely produce the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl) ureas which are plant growth regulators, in high yield at a low cost, by using isonicotinamide as a raw material and reacting with a trivalent aryl iodide compound. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced by reacting a compound of formula I (X is H or halogen) with a trivalent aryl iodide compound of formula II (Ar is aryl; A and B are same or different group eliminable as anion or together form O) in a solvent (e.g. water or acetonitrile) usually at 10-60 deg.C. The concentration of the compound of formula I in the reaction solvent is preferably 1-20% (W/V). The amount of the compound of formula II is 1.0-2.0mol., preferably 1.0-1.2mol. per 1mol. of the compound of formula I. The compound of formula II can be synthesized e.g. by reacting a univalent aryl iodide with chlorine.
