Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a ferroelectric liquid crystal element having excellent low- temperature working characteristics and high-speed response in a ferroelectric liquid crystal element comprising a substrate, a voltage impressing means, an orientation controlling layer and a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, by adding a specific liquid crystal compound to the ferroelectric liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric liquid crystal element layer 1 consisting of a mixture of one or more liquid crystal compounds (e.g. compound shown by formula IV) shown by formula I [A1 and A2 are bifunctional 6-membered ring group not containing substituent group; X is group shown by formula II or formula III (k and m are 1 or 2); R1 and R2 are chain group which may contain substituent group] and another liquid crystal compound (e.g. compound shown by formula V) is laid between glass substrates 2 having transparent electrodes 3 and orientated control layer 4, a spacer 5 is set and the transparent electrodes 3 are connected through a lead wire in such a way that electric voltage can be impressed from an electric source 7 to give a ferroelectric liquid crystal element.
