Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the displacement state of a body to be measured with high accuracy by varying the width of each track of a main scale according to the illuminance distribution of the incident luminous flux of an illumination system on the main scale. CONSTITUTION:The luminous flux from a light source 4 is collimated by a condenser lens 6 into nearly parallel luminous flux, which illuminates respective tracks 21-27 on the main scale 2. Then, those tracks 21-27 increase in width according to the distance from the optical axis and the increasing width is set in consideration of the illuminance distribution on the scale 2. Consequently, the quantities of the light incident on respective photodetecting elements 51-57 through the respective slits 31-37 of a fixed scale 3 are equalized to equalize their output values. Thus, the tracks 21-27 are varied in width to correct the irregularity of the illuminance distribution of the luminous flux from the lens 6.
