Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent working environment pollution caused by mercury by mixing aluminium, and an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, or a specific metal with molten zinc, by atomizing the molten zinc alloy to obtain zinc alloy powder, and by amalgamating the zinc alloy powder with mercury or a mercury compound in a dry process. CONSTITUTION:Molten zinc alloy containing specific amounts of aluminium and at least one element selected from an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, or in addition to these elements, an element which increases hydrogen overvoltage such as In, Pb, Cd, Tl, and Ga is atomized to obtain zinc alloy powder. This alloy powder is amalgamated with mercury or a mercury compound in a dry process. By using this amalgamated zinc alloy powder as a negative active material in an alkaline dry battery, hydrogen gas evolution is retarded regardless of a low amalgamation rate. The environmental pollution caused by mercury can be minimized.
