PURPOSE:To increase battery performance by mixing mercury, aluminium, and an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, or a specific metal element with molten zinc, by atomizing the molten zinc alloy to obtain zinc alloy powder, and by amalgamating the zinc alloy powder with mercury or a mercury compound. CONSTITUTION:Mercury, aluminium, and an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, or in addition to these metals at least one element selected from In, Pb, Cd, Tl, and Ga are mixed with molten zinc. This molten zinc alloy is atomized to obtain zinc alloy powder. The zinc alloy powder obtained is amalgamated with mercury or a mercury compound in a dry process. The alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal are is at least one metal selected from Li, Na, K, Rb, Ce, Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba. By using this amalgamated zinc alloy powder as a negative active material in an alkaline dry battery, hydrogen gas evolution is retarded regardless of a low amalgamation rate.
