PURPOSE:To obtain high battery performance by mixing mercury, and an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, or a specific metal element with molten zinc, by atomizing the molten alloy to obtain zinc alloy powder, and by amalgamating the zinc alloy powder with mercury or a mercury compound in a dry process. CONSTITUTION:Zinc is melted, and mercury and an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal are mixed with the molten zinc. In addition to these metals, an element which increases hydrogen overvoltage in coexistence with zinc, for example, at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Pb, In, Cd, Tl, and Ga is mixed with the molten zinc. The molten zinc alloy containing specified amounts of these metals is atomized with a high pressure gas to prepare zinc alloy powder. By using this amalgamated zinc alloy powder as a negative active material in an alkaline dry battery, gas evolution is retarded regardless of a low amalgamation rate. The performance of the battery is increased.
