Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a recording medium which has an excellent noise characteristic and is adequate for high-density magnetic recording with a magnetic recording medium having a magnetic metallic film on a nonmagnetic substrate by forming the magnetic film having the specific compsn. formula essentially consisting of Co, Ni and Cr. CONSTITUTION:The thin metallic film having the compsn. expressed by the formula is formed as the magnetic film. In the formula, (a), (b), (c) and (d) denote atomic % and 5<=a<=40, 0<=b<=20, 0.5<=c<=5, 0.1<=d<=2. The reason for confining the value (a) to 50-40, (b) to 0-20 lies in that the excellent magnetic characteristics, more particularly high coercive force and high residual magnetic flux density of the Co-Ni or Co-Ni-Cr alloy are assured in said ranges. The reason for confining (c) to 0.5-5 and (d) to 0.1-2 range, respectively, lies in that the remarkable effect of decreasing the noise level by the addition of Ta and Pr is obtd. within sand ranges without losing the excellent magnetic characteristics of the Co-Ni or Co-Ni-Cr alloy.
