Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily obtain the titled substance in high purity, by reacting a racemic mixture of carboxylic acids with an optically active 10,10'- dihydroxy-9,9'-biphenanthryl, thereby forming an optically active host-guest complex. CONSTITUTION:Carboxylic acids having high optical purity can be produced by dissolving optically active 10,10'-dihydroxy-9,9'-biphenanthryl (the compound of formula) or its derivative in racemic carboxylic acids (preferably chloropropionic acid, etc.), leaving the solution at -30-+150 deg.C for 1 hr-3 days to precipitate crystals of an optically active host-guest complex and heating the crystal e.g. under reduced pressure. The above process has high economical efficiency since it can be performed without using expensive reagents nor necessitating complicate operations. The titled substance is important as a raw material or intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, perfumes, etc.
