In other words, the hFE of an NPN transistor decreases at small currents, and rapidly decreases below a certain value even at large currents. Also, PNP transistors can handle small currents.
hFE has good linearity, but the higher the current, the slower it becomes. If such a transistor is used as the output transistor of the audio amplifier shown in Figure 1, there will not be much of a problem when the output voltage at output terminal 2 is small, but as the output voltage increases, the distortion rate will worsen, especially near the maximum output. The distortion rate becomes worse rapidly. This is because the collector-emitter voltage of the output transistor becomes smaller, as shown in Figure 2.
This is because it is even worse than hFE. The distortion rate worsens because the base current of the output transistor increases due to the decrease in hFE, and the base current of the driver transistor that drives the output transistor also increases, making the load on the pre-driver transistor heavier.

ある。 In Figure 3, since negative feedback is applied from the output terminal 2 to the first stage, the current i 3 flowing through the output transistor Q 4 is almost the same as the current flowing through the load resistor RL , and a current with little distortion flows. There is. However, when outputting a sine wave signal, as shown in Figure 2, the output voltage is such that the current ic = (= i 3 : collector current) flows at which the h FE of the power transistors Q 4 and Q 5 begins to decrease, that is, near the maximum output voltage. The output voltage distortion at this time is much larger than the output voltage distortion at a small output, and in extreme cases, the sine wave signal waveform may become clipped as shown in FIG. 5a.

きる。 Therefore, in order to improve distortion near the maximum output voltage, the power transistors Q 4 ,
Just give enough drive current to the base terminal of Q5 . (See Figure 5 b, c, d) In other words, the current i 2 flowing through the driver transistor Q 2 is the current i 3 flowing through the output transistor Q 4 divided by h FE , so if h FE is nonlinear, then , i 2 also becomes non-linear, and a distorted voltage is generated across the detection resistor R 5 . By applying this voltage to the base of the pre-driver transistor Q 1 via the feedback resistor R 6 , the h FE of the output transistor Q 4 decreases, so as to compensate for the increase in the base current of the driver transistor Q 2 . The collector current i 1 of the predriver transistor Q 1 can be increased. Therefore, even if the h FE of the output transistor Q 4 decreases, the load on the predrive stage does not become heavy, and a sufficient drive current can be obtained, so that the output distortion factor can be improved.

This is a result of positive feedback. The operations on both the PNP side and NPN side are the same as the circuit shown in FIG. 3, so the explanation will be omitted.

It is possible to improve the deterioration of the distortion factor due to the decrease in the distortion factor and realize an ultra-low distortion factor amplifier.
