Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the degradation in picture display quality due to influences of the electrode deviation in a multiple matrix liquid crystal display device by providing a common electrode with notched parts corresponding to shapes of data electrodes. CONSTITUTION:In the matrix liquid crystal display device provided with data electrodes 8 and 9 of multiple matrixes and a common electrode 10, notched parts 11 are provided in the electrode 10 in accordance with electrodes 8 and 9. If electrodes 8 and 9 are shifted upward relatively to the electrode 10, effective display parts where a picture is displayed when a voltage is applied are parts 12 and 13 indicated by oblique lines. Since the area of effective display picture elements is reduced uniformly for all electrodes by positional deviations of electrodes 8 and 9 at this time, the display variance at intervals of two picture elements is prevented, and thus, the degradation in display quality is lessened very much.

Various types of electrode structures for dot matrix liquid crystal displays have been put into practical use, such as a double or other multi-matrix electrode structure and an electrode structure using multilayer wiring. FIG. 1 is a conceptual diagram of a conventional liquid crystal display having dual matrix electrodes. In the figure, 1 is a common electrode, and data electrodes 2 and 3 corresponding to the data electrodes 2 and 3 are located on this common electrode. 4 is a common electrode drive circuit, and 5 is a data electrode drive circuit. A liquid crystal substance is sealed between the common electrode 1 and the data electrode 2 or 5 in the figure to form a display, and the liquid crystal substance is sealed depending on the relationship between the potential difference between the common and data electrodes and the threshold voltage of the liquid crystal. The display will appear. Although the display device of this example has a simple common electrode shape, it has the disadvantage that display discontinuities are likely to occur every two lines. This problem will be explained with reference to FIG. #!
FIG. 2 is a diagram of the display device of FIG. 1 when the data electrode is shifted to the upper side of the screen with respect to the common electrode. In the figure, 1 is the if(:ff) electrode as in Figure 1, and 2 and 5 are the data ta. When the data electrode is shifted to the top of the screen as shown in the figure, the displayed image is the same as the common electrode. Since this is a portion where the data electrodes overlap (the shaded portion in the figure), there are two types of pixels: pixel 6 whose display area does not change and pixel 7 whose area decreases due to the shift K.

As a result, lines of normal display and lines of display whose area has been reduced appear alternately on the screen, which significantly impairs the quality of the display screen.

FIG. 4 is a diagram showing a display situation when the data electrodes are shifted to the upper side of the screen in the matrix type liquid crystal display of the present invention. In other words, it represents a situation in which the data electrodes 8 and 9 are shifted toward the top of the screen relative to the control electrode 10. In this case, the effective display area displayed by the applied voltage is indicated by diagonal lines 12 and 13 is applied.

In the present invention, unlike the conventional example, the reduction in effective display pixel area due to positional deviation of data electrodes occurs uniformly for all electrodes, so display unevenness that occurs every second electrode does not occur. Therefore, deterioration in display quality can be kept to an extremely low level. Fig. 4 shows a case where the electrode position is extremely shifted, but such a large shift does not occur during mass production of displays, but slight shifts always occur, but in the display of the present invention, , there is almost no need to pay attention to the deterioration in display quality caused by this. The effect of electrode misalignment on display quality becomes more noticeable as the number of multiplexed electrodes increases, but if the present invention is used, there is no need to pay attention to the number of multiplexed electrodes. In the specific example of FIGS. 3 and 4,
The shape of the notch of the common electrode is uniformly continuous from one end to near the other end, but it is important to provide connecting parts here and there so that there is virtually no shadow on the displayed image to prevent disconnection of the electrode. Needless to say, it is effective.

As described above, according to the present invention, deterioration in image display quality due to the influence of electrode misalignment in a multi-matrix liquid crystal display can be suppressed to an extremely low level.
