Abstract

PURPOSE:To change the background color of display without modifying the constitution of an ECD much, by coating an upper substrate on a display electrode side with a thin film, having interference color, partially or entirely. CONSTITUTION:The upper substrate on the display electrode side of an electrochromic display body which employs electrochemical oxidation-reduction reaction is coated with a thin film, having interference color, entirely or partially. For example, when a coating 22 of the thin film is provided on the upper glass substrate 21, the background color of display changes by utilizing multiple reflection due to a difference in refractivity among air, the thin film 22 and glass substrate 21. Further, a coating 32 of the thin film is provided inside of the glass substrate 31 and a transparent electrode 33 is arranged on it to achieve coloring by multiple reflection because of a difference in refractivity among the substrate 31, thin layer 32 and transparent electrode 33.
