Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a solvent or diluting agent for an ink, coating material, etc. from an inexpensive raw material in a high selectivity, by reacting a dialkyl ether with a glycol in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: A dialkyl ether of formulaI(R is tertiary alkyl; R1 is primary or secondary alkyl) is reacted with a glycol of formula II (R2 is bifunctional hydrocarbon group) in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst to give a compound of formula III. A typical example of the strongly acidic cation exchange resin to be used as the catalyst is a resin having sulfone groups, e.g. "Amberlyst-15(". The reaction is carried out by suspending the cation exchange resin in a reaction raw material mixture or passing the reaction raw material mixture through a packed bed of the cation exchange resin.
EFFECT: The reaction product is easily separated from the catalyst, which is repeatedly usable. The formed alcohol can be used for preparing the compound of formulaIwith slight side reactions.
