Abstract
PURPOSE: The reaction between isobutylene and methanol is effected in the presence of two kinds of specific catalysts to readily produce t-butyl methyl ether that is useful as a solvent and antiknock.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of isobutylene and methanol is effected in liquid phase using a flow reactor to produce t-butyl methyl ether in which a strongly acidic cationic exchange resin and anionic exchange resin are employed in combination as the catalyst. When only the strongly acidic cationic exchange resin is used, it partially decomposes and acidic substances mix in the reaction mixture, resulting in the partial decomposition of the product; however, the addition of the anionic exchange resin permits the capture of the decomposed acidic substances and prevent the decomposition of the product.
