Abstract
1,265,616 Unsaturated ketones; propionyl ruthenium carbonyls. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V; 17 Sept 1970- [19 Sept., 1969], No. 44396/70. Headings C2C and C2J. Ethyl alkenyl ketones are prepared by reacting ethylene and CO in the absence of substantial amounts of hydrogen or a hydrogen source (e.g. H 2 O, alkanols) at 150-250‹ C. and a C 2 H 4 ,: CO molar ratio of 2 : 1 to 10 : 1 in liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising Ru in complex. combination with CO. Up to 20 molar per cent of H 2 or a source thereof based on CO present are satisfactory. The catalyst may be preformed or prepared in situ. A solvent may be present. Products include ethylvinyl ketone and various 7, 9, 11 and 13-carbon unsaturated ketones with diethylketone as a by-product. Propionyl ruthenium carbonyls where n is 2, 4 or 6 may be formed in the reaction and used as catalysts in further runs.
