Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound effectively in high yield, by reacting a isobutylene-containing dydrocarbon and methanol in a specific molar ratio, distilling reaction mexuture, and recycling an azeotrope of the title compound and methanol.
CONSTITUTION: Iosbutylene-containing hydeocarbon and methanol are reacted in a ratio of isobutylene:methanol=1:1.0-1.4 by passing the mixture through a fixed bed of particles of a strong acid type cation-exchange resin. The reaction mixture is passed through a fixed bed of a water-insoluble solid granular acid-nuetralizing agent having an average particle diameter of 0.1-10mm, and subsequently an unreacted hydrocarbon mixture is removed by distillation in a separation column. The mixture is further distilled. in a multistage distillation column, and is obtained from the top of the column. The azeotrope is recycled to the reactor and reused. The highly pure title compound is obtained from the bottom of the column. The reaction mixture after passing through the catalyst bed is devided into two parts, and the one stream is preferably recycled to the fixed bed directly.
