PURPOSE:To precisely check the damping force of a shock absorber by storing one cycle of a reference characteristic waveform measured by a master piece in an instrument every proper interval, thereby automatically correcting an aged error of a measuring system. CONSTITUTION:A master piece measures one cycle of a reference characteristic waveform which is stored in a memory 48 of an instrument 40. Allowable tolerances DELTAA1, DELTAA2 of high and low limits sent from a tolerance setter 38 are over- lapped on the one cycle of the reference characteristic waveform A. The tolerances are relatively and fluctuatingly stored according to a fine variation error of the reference characteristics waveform A caused by an aged variation of a measuring system. Thereafter, a fluctuation of a shock absorber is measured in the form of a damping force waveform and the instrument 40 detects a range (c) which is out of the allowable tolerance, thereby readily and automatically detecting an unusual state of the shock absorber.
