Abstract
941,963. Measuring electrically. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. March 24,1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 10816/61. Heading G1N. In weighing apparatus for railway vehicles the bending stress in the rails due to the weight of the vehicle is measured by at least three strain gauges attached at different points between adjacent rail supports, the outputs of the gauges being differentially combined to give an output having a maximum value corresponding to the weight of the vehicle. Fig. 1a shows an arrangement in which 4 resistance strain gauges D1 to D4 are attached to a rail 3 between adjacent sleepers 1 and 2. The gauges are connected in a bridge circuit as shown in Fig. 2, where R1 corresponds to the resistance of gauge D1 the output after amplification appearing across terminals 7 and 8. Strain gauges may be fixed to both rails to measure the axle loading of the vehicle in which case the gauges may be connected as shown in Fig. 3, R1<SP>1</SP> to R4<SP>1</SP> being the gauges on the second rail. It is shown mathematically that it is advantageous to have the spacing between gauges 1 and 2 and gauges 3 and 4 equal and that the gauges 2 and 3 may be mounted at the same point and, if the circuit of Fig. 3 is utilized, combined into one gauge of double the resistance. The gauges may be attached directly to the rail or alternatively to an elastic member 9 Fig. 7 firmly attached to the rail by brackets 10.
