Abstract

1335520 Resistance strain gauges PEAK COMPONENTS Ltd 8 Feb 1972 59192/72 Divided out of 1333167 Heading G1N A transducer for sensing vehicle axle loads or strains in buildings or other structures, comprises at least one resistance wire strain gauge 23 on a neck 22 extending transversely between extensions 21 of end blocks 2 each having a bolt hole 3 and four hard steel pins 4 for securing the transducer to the structure being monitored. The transducer may be enclosed by a protective casing, the spaces being filled with a moisturerepelling resilient insulating material, e.g. silicon rubber, and the casing then being dipped in a waterproof compound. The transducer may be removably attached to the structure being tested by stud bolts on the structure which pass through holes 3 and receive nuts to force pins 4 into the surface of the structure. Alternatively, straps may be used to fasten the ends of the transducer to the structure. The blocks 2, extensions 21 and neck 22 are preferably made from a single block of metal, e.g. steel having the same temperature co-efficient of expansion as the structure under test. A second strain gauge may be mounted on the other side of the neck 22 and fixed temperature compensating resistors may be mounted on the neck or blocks, the strain gauges and resistors being connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit.
