Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the colorless objective compound by distilling bisphenol A.phenol adduct obtained from phenol and acetone in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, under reduced pressure at a specific temperature, and recrystallizing the resulting crude bisphenol A.
CONSTITUTION: A bisphenol A.phenol adduct (BPA adduct) obtained by the reaction of phenol with acetone in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin catalyst is distilled under a vacuum of 10W100mmHg at 160W185°C (pref. 165W180°C) to recover crude BPA containing 1W10wt% phenol. The crude BPA is dissolved in an aqueous medium by heating at 95W100°C, and cooled to recrystallize BPA. The amount of the aqueous medium is 0.5W10 times weight, pref. 1W5 times weight of BPA.
USE: Raw material of polycarbonate resin, epoxy resin etc.
