Abstract
PURPOSE: The condensation reaction between a phenol and a ketone is conducted using a sulfonic acid cation-exchange resin partially modified with a pyridyl- alkane thioacetal as a catalyst to produce the titled compound with increased reaction rate and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: A bisphenol is obtained by condensation reaction between a phenol with no substituent on the para position to the hydroxyl and a ketone in the presence of a catalyst of sulfonic acid cation-exchange resin partially modified with a pyridylalkane thioacetal at 60W100°C in an inert gas atmosphere under normal to 5 atmospheric pressure. The modification of ion-exchange resin is readily achieved by adding a pyridylalkane thioacetal prepared from a ketone such acetone and a pyridylalkane thiol of the formula (R is alkyl) such as 3-pyridylmethane thiol by the reaction at 50W100°C to a sulfonic acid cation- exchange resin that has previously been converted into the H-type by use of an acid such as hydrochloric acid.
