Abstract

1,182,260. Phenolic compounds; separation from condensation products. WILLIAM H. MOSS RESEARCH Ltd. 22 Dec., 1967 [27 Sept., 1966], No. 43090/66. Heading B1B. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Phenolic compounds are separated from mixtures obtained by the condensation of phenol or a cresol with formaldehyde, by submitting the mixture to distillation, and passing steam through the mixture during at least the latter part of the distillation. In an example, phenol is heated with aqueous formaldehyde, under reflux, and in the presence of a small proportion of zinc oxide. The zinc oxide is separated from the liquid reaction product, and the clear liquid is heated to 190‹C. to distil off water, formaldehyde and some of the phenol. The temperature is then raised to 300‹C. to distil off pure phenol. The residual liquid is kept at 280‹-310‹C. for 25 minutes, and then cooled to 200‹C. Live steam is then blown into it, and distillation is established at 170‹C. The distillate separates into a water layer and a phenol layer. The liquid temperature is gradually raised to 250‹C., and the distillate now comprises 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenyl-methane. The temperature is then raised to 310‹C. yielding an oily distillate which on standing gives colourless crystals of 2,6-bis-(2-hydroxy-benzyl)-phenol. The liquid distillation residue, when cooled, solidified to a yellow resin of average molecular weight 550. Other examples relate to the production of 2,4<SP>1</SP>-and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-diphenyl-methanes, and of bis(2-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)methane.
