Abstract
In a distillation process for the separation of pure phenol from a crude reaction product containing a preponderance of phenol together with minor proportions of cyclohexanol and/or cyclohexanone, the crude phenol is first submitted to fractionation to distil off the lower-boiling impurities and the bulk of the phenol, leaving the higher-boiling impurities as p distillation-residues; the distillate is then re-fractionated to separate pure phenol. In an example, cyclohexane is subjected to air-oxidation, in the presence of a cobalt naphthenate catalyst; and the product is submitted to vacuum-distillation to obtain a "cyclohexanol cut". This cut is dehydrogenated using a platinum-on-carbon catalyst. The crude phenol is fractionated using a 35-plate column at a reflux ratio of 5 to 1; and a fraction boiling up to 184 DEG C. is withdrawn as distillate. This distillate is re-fractionated for the removal of water and light ends; and then, with a head-temperature of 178 DEG -182 DEG C., pure phenol is withdrawn as a side-stream from the 7th plate from the bottom of the column.
