Abstract

<PICT:0782865/III/1> The products obtained by the acid-decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide are separated by subjecting the mixture to distillation in the presence of water in a plate-type fractionating column which is operated so that pure acetone concentrates at and is withdrawn from the head of the column, while cumene and methylstyrene (both hydrocarbons being substantially free from phenol) and water are withdrawn as sidestreams; and phenol is obtained at the base of the column. This phenol contains high-boiling compounds such as cumyl phenol and it may also contain dimethylphenyl carbinol and acetophenone; but a purer phenol may be obtained by separating the carbinol and acetophenone as an additional sidestream from the column. A reaction mixture containing phenol and acetone in equimolecular proportions, as well as cumene (5.5 per cent), methylstyrene (1.7 per cent), dimethylphenyl carbinol (1 per cent), acetophenone (1.2 per cent), a proportion of products having higher boiling points, and water (10 per cent), is introduced through pipe 1 into a 50-60 plate-column having three decanting-plates m, n, o. The temperature at the base of the column is maintained at 120 DEG C. by heater V. Acetone vapours pass overhead and are condensed in condenser T, the liquid being returned to the head of the column. Acetone product is withdrawn through pipe 2. A fraction containing a high proportion of odorous, coloured and reducing impurities is discharged through pipe 7. A mixture rich in cumene and methylstyrene, containing only 20 parts per million of phenol, is withdrawn from decanter m, while the water constituting the decanted lower layer is returned to the column. An aqueous solution containing 100 parts per million of phenol is withdrawn from decanter n. A mixture containing 8 per cent of acetophenone, 1 per cent of dimethyphenyl carbinol, 90 per cent of hydrocarbons and less than 0.1 per cent of phenol is withdrawn from decanter o, while the water decanted from this plate is returned to the column. Phenol is withdrawn from the bottom of the column through pipe 6.
