Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound from the bottoms of azeotropic distillation of the reaction mixture between a phenol and methanol with a hydrocarbon, by circulating an aqueous phase formed through extraction of the distillate with a methanolic aqueous solution and a hydrocarbon phase through the reaction and distillation systems respectively.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol or o-cresol (A) or both are reacted with methanol in the presence of a catalyst, and the reaction mixture after removal of gaseous by-products is distilled in contact with a hydrocarbon capable of forming an azeotrope with A, to distill A with the hydrocarbon and water out of the system. The hydrocarbon phase of the distillate is brought into contact with a methanolic aqueous solution (B) to extract A with B and separate the layers. The phase B containing A and the hydrocarbon phase are circulated through the reaction and the azeotropic distillation systems, respectively to obtain the objective substance from the bottoms. A9-13C aliphatic hydrocarbon boiling at 150W190°C is preferably used.
USE: A raw matrial for preparing polyoxyphenylene oxide resins.
