Abstract
PURPOSE: To obviate the production of scraps by treating residual molten metal by the use of a prescribed vertically short mold.
CONSTITUTION: A vertically short mold A is beforehand disposed near the array of vertically long molds 8, and molten steel is charged successively into the molds 8 through a nozzle provided in the bottom part of a ladle 6, after which only the molten steel that will be the residual molten steel is charged into the mold A and is made into an ingot as a vertically short steel ingot by an ingot making method for vertically short mold. The ingot making method for vertically short mold refers to a method of making ingots by using a mold having the short side size of the section in the horizontal direction larger as compared to the size in the height direction of the mold, covering the inside side walls of said mold with heat insulating materials, top-pouring molten steel into sald mold through a nozzle provided in the bottom part of a ladle, covering the top surface of the molten steel with a heat insulating material and accelerating unidireactional solidification from the bottom part of the steel ingot.
