Abstract

PURPOSE: A polyfluoroalkyl ketone, obtained from inexpensively available trifluoroethene, is subjected to dehydrohalogenation and solvolysis in the presence of a basic compound under mild conditions to produce the titled compound used as an intermediate of medicines and agricultural m chemicals.
CONSTITUTION: The dehydrohalogenation and solvolysis of a polyfluoroalkyl ketone of formula I(R is alkyl; X is halogen) such as methyl-2-chloro-1,2,2,- trifluoroethyl-ketone is conducted in the presence of a baseic compound such as an alkoxide or sodium hydroxide in a one-stage process to give α-fluoro-β- (alkylketo) ester of formula II such as α-acetyl-β-fluoroacetic ethyl ester. The starting material of formula Iis obtained by Friedel-Craft reaction of toxicity- free trifluorethene.
