Abstract

PURPOSE: An aminophenol is made to react with an excess amount of an isopropyl halide under anhydrous conditions with no use of usual organic solvent in the presence of a specific catalyst to produce title compound useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals in high yield and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of an aminophenol, e.g., 3-aminophenol, with an isopropyl halide, e.g., isopropyl chloride, is carried out under anhydrous conditions in the presence of at least one selected from benzyltrialkylammonium salts, benzyltrialkylsulfonium salts, benzyltriphenylphosphonium salts, tetra-alkylammonium salts, tetra-alkyl phosphonium salts and an alkali metal hydroxide at 0W150°C for 1W20hr to produce an aminophenyl isopropyl ether, e.g., 3-isopropoxyaniline.
EFFECT: The formation of by-products is almost completely prohibited.
