Abstract

PURPOSE: To surely stop the inflow of steam to a steam turbine in an emergency, by providing a ball buoy-up unit for a ball check valve in a steam pipe to buoy up a ball by introduction of inert gas.
CONSTITUTION: Hot water and steam gushing from a geothermal well are separated from each other by a steam/water separator. A ball check valve is installed in a steam pipe for conducting the separated steam to a turbine. When much water has entered into the valve chamber 14 of the ball check valve due to some cause, a ball 18 is buoyed up by the water staying in the valve and is brought into pressure contact with a valve seat 19 to stop the flow of the steam. A gas blowing dish 23, which also serves as a ball support, is provided under the space surrounded by a guide plate 21 for guiding the ball 18. At the time of the emergency shutoff, inert gas such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide in a gas container 27 is conducted to the blowing dish 23 through a blowing pipe 25 to buoy up the ball 18 into pressure contact with the valve seat 19.
