Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 and R3 H or lower alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, or halogen; the bond between the 3- and 4- carbon atoms of carbostyril skeleton is single or double) and its salt.
EXAMPLE: 6-( 3-Methyl-imidazo[ 1,2-a ]pyridin-2-yl )-1-methyl-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril monohydrobromide.
USE: It has cardiac muscle contraction increasing action (positive inotropic action) and coronary blood stream increasing action, and is useful as a cardiotonic agent. For example, it is especially effectve as a remedy for cardiac insufficiency such as congestive heart. It scarcely accelerates the pulse.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting the compound of formula II (X1 is halogen) with the known compound of formula III in the absence of or in a proper solvent (e.g. methanol), in the presence of a basic compound as a dehydrohalogenating agent.
