Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain methacrolein efficiently even in small oxygen, ratio, at high space velocity, and at low temperature, by subjecting isobutene to contact oxidation in gaseous phase using a catalyst prepared by combining Mo, Bi, Ni, Cr and Sn or additionally Al and/or Zr.
CONSTITUTION: In preparing methacrolein by subjecting isobutene with molecular oxygen to contact reaction in gaseous phase, a catalyst shown by the formula (Mo)a (Bi)b (Ni)c (Cr)d (Sn)e (X)f (O)g (X is Al and/or Zr; when a=10, b=0.1W 10, c=0.5W15, d=0.1W10, e=0.1W15, f=0W10, g is usually 33W83) is used in the reaction. The catalyst ingredients are preferably supported by a carrier for use, and before use the catalyst is calcined at 400W700°C for 3W24hr under air flow.
EFFECT: The catalyst exhibits high activity in spite of small oxygen ratio, its use suppresses combustion reactions and makes the temperature control of the reaction easy.
