Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the optical transmission characteristics in a visible region by using polymethyl methacrylate contg. specific amts. of dust and transition metallic ion as a core component, and a synthetic high polymer of a refractive index lower than that of the core component as a sleeve component. CONSTITUTION:In the state of absence of oxygen, a polymn. initiator and a chain transfer agent are added to methyl methacrylate, and is subjected to bulk polymn. in a sealed state at <=1 piece/mm.<2> by irradiation of He-Ne laser beam of 632.8nm dust, whereby the polymer contg. <=50ppm Fe, Mn, <=10ppm Cu, Ni, <=5ppm Cr, and <=2ppm Co as transition metallic ions is obtained. This polymer is melt spun at the temp. at which no air bubbles are produced, whereby a core is formed. A sleeve is put around this core by means of a synthetic high polymer consisting of an amorphous synthetic high polymer of a refractive index lower than that of the core, whereby the low-loss plastic optical fiber is produced.
