Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled dense uniform unbrittle highly flame-retarding foam, by reacting a benzyl ether type liquid phenol/HCHO resin with a polyisocyanate in the presence of both a P-containing flame retardant and a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A precondensate obtained by reacting phenol with a formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst which is an alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or the like is stripped of the unreacted monomers by evaporation and, then, polycondensed to obtain (A) a normally liquid benzylphenol/HCHO resin having benzyl ether groups and methylol groups and having a G.P.C. chart characteristic curve having a maximum peak in the mononuclear compound region and declining sharply in the trinuclear compound region. Next, this resin A is reacted with a polyisocyanate in the presence of a P-containing flame retardant, a blowing agent and a curing catalyst to obtain an urethane foam having non-flammability (JIS-K-7201) of class 2 or higher.
