Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a novolak copolymer useful for bonding polyester fiber to rubber, by cocondensing a resol precondensate of a m-substituted phenol with resorcinol.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol of the formula, wherein R1 is CH3 or OCH3 and R2 is H or CH3, (e.g. m-cresol, 3,5-xylenol) is reacted with 1.2W2.4mol times the phenol of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali catalyst to form a resol precondensate containing 1W30wt%, based on charged amount, unreacted formaldehyde. Then, this resol precondensate is cocondensed with a mixture containing an acid in an amount equimolar to the above alkali catalyst W10mol% excess over the above phenol, and 1.0W2.5mol times, the above phenol of resorcinol. It is possible to obtain the titled water-soluble copolymer having an excellent effect of bonding polyester fiber to resorcinol.
