Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title fiber, useful as a raw material for noncombustible paper, and having improved flexibility, efficiently, by adding a hardener to a resol type phenolic resin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide, etc., and by curing a fiber formed from the mixture in a fluidized specific medium.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A phenol is reacted with (B) an aldehyde in the presence of (C) an alkali (earth) metal hydroxide to give a resol type phenolic resin, which is mixed with (D) a hardener, e.g. hydrochloric acid, and fed into a fluidized medium which has an affinity for the resin but dissolves the resin only partly or at a low rate, e.g. an oxyalkylend compound, to form a cured fiber. Preferably, the amounts of (C) and (D) are 0.001W0.3wt% per phenolic hydroxyl group and 0.1W30wt% based on the nonvolatile content of the resin respectively.
