Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a novolak copolymer useful for bonding polyester fiber to rubber, by cocondensing a resol precondensate of a m-substituted phenol with an alkylresorcinol.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol of the formula, wherein R1 is CH3 or OCH3 and R2 is H or CH3, (e.g., m-cresol, 3,5-xylenol) is reacted with 1.2W2.4mol times the phenol of formaldehyde in the presence of an alkali catalyst to obtain a resol precondensate containing 1W30wt%, based on charged amount, unreacted formaldehyde. Then, this resol precondensate is concondensed with an acid in an amount equivalent to the above alkali catalyst W10mol% excess over the above phenol and 1.0W2.5mol times, alkylresorcinol or a mixture thereof. It is possible to obtain the titled water-dispersible copolymer having an excellent effect of bonding polyester fiber to rubber.
