Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a phenolic copolycondensation resin having well balanced storage stability and fast curing characteristics, by subjecting a phenol and formaldehyde to copolycondensation wherein a highly active compound, e.g., resorcinol, and a reactive group, e.g., methylol group, are present.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol and/or a phenolic formaldehyde precondensate having a molecular weight of 200W600 is reacted with formaldehyde in an amount to give 0.5W2 moles, preferably 0.8W2 moles, based on 1 mole of phenolic nucleus of a total of methylol and dimethylene ether groups in a reaction product (A) in the presence of an alkali catalyst at not more than 60°C. The reaction product (A) and a compound shown by the formula (R1 is H or 1W12 C alkyl; X is OH, NH2, OCOR2, or OR3; R2 and R3 are 1W4C alkyl) in an amount of 0.1W0.8 mole, preferably 0.2W0.5 mole based on total of methylol and dimethyl groups are subjected to copolycondensation at 50W110°C and adjusted to pH 8W12.
