Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a modified phenol resin suitable for the urethane reaction by converting the phenolic hydroxyl groups into alcoholic hydroxyl groups, by reacting an alkylene carbonate with a benzyl ether type phenol resin.
CONSTITUTION: The titled modified resin is obtained by reacting a benzyl ether type phenol resin with an alkylene carbonate of the formula, wherein R and R' are each H or a 1W6C alkyl (e.g., ethylene carbonate) in the presence of an alkaline catalyst such as potassium carbonate to thereby convert the phenolic hydroxyl groups into alcoholic hydroxyl groups. The conversion is 0.01W1mol, pref., 0.1W0.7mol per mol phenolic hydroxyl group. Cured products obtained by reacting this resin with a polyisocyanate have a high crosslinking density, are nonbrittle, and have a low content of unreacted resin and improved mechanical strength.
