Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI(m is 1-50; n is 0-20; R is ethylene, propylene or butylene; R' is ethylene). USE:Useful as a polyether polyol or a crosslinking agent for a polyurethane and a raw material for preparing a foam or elastomer, adhesive, coating material, photosetting monomer, etc. PROCESS:A spiroglycol of formula II is reacted with an alkylene oxide, e.g. ethylene oxide, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, e.g. NaOH, KOH or an amine compound, in an inert solvent, e.g benzene, to give the compound of formulaI. The starting raw material compound of formula II is easily obtained by reacting pentaerythritol with hydroxypivalaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst.
