Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare granular inexpensive active carbon activated with zinc chloride, by adding zinc chloride to an organic compound containing large amounts of O2 and H2, granulating the resultant mixture, calcining the granulated material, and washing the calcined material with an acid and water.
CONSTITUTION: 20wt% or more, expressed in terms of dried weight, zinc chloride is added to an organic compound containing relatively large amounts of O2 and H2, e.g. used powdery active carbon or lignin, or a mixture of two more thereof, and the moisture content is adjusted. The adjusted mixture is then granulated into granules. The resultant granules are then calcined at 500°C or above, washed with an acid and water and dried. Thus, the aimed active carbon having a high adsorptivity and a surface area ≥800m2/g is obtained.
