Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polymer useful as medical materials, etc., scarcely putrefying, having an increased water absorbing capacity, by reacting a polyvinyl alcohol- type polymer with a cyclic acid anhydride and further with a specific monovalent metallic compound under conditions.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyvinyl alcohol-type polymer is reacted with (B) a cyclic acid anhydride, e.g. maleic anhydride, under such conditions as to give a modified polymer having a crosslinked structure. The polymer is treated with (C) a hydroxide, an alkoxide or a salt of a monovalent metal, e.g. Na, or K, to give the desired polymer.
EFFECT: The polymer has a water absorbing capacity of 50W500 times as large as its own weight.
