Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity sorbitan useful as a raw material of food additives (e.g. emulsifier) and a drug, economically, by passing an aqueous solution of dehydrated D-sorbitol through a column packed with a cation exchanger adsorbed with an alkaline earth metal.
CONSTITUTION: D-Sorbitol is dehydrated to obtain an aqueous solution containing unreacted D-sorbitol, sorbitan, and isosorbide (two water molecules are removed from D-sorbitol). The solution is passed through a column packed with a cation exchanger having adsorbed alkaline earth metal (Ca, Ba, Mg or Sr; esp. Ca), and the adsorbed sorbitan is eluted with water to obtain highly pure sorbitan. A cation exchange resin, a cation exchange fiber or a cation exchange sephadex can be used as the cation exchanger, however, a sulfonic acid-type strongly acidic cation exchange resin is most effective.
