Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and remove the mercury contained in waste water easily by electrolyzing the waste water contg. mercury thereby depositing metallic mercury on cathode.
CONSTITUTION: An electrolyzing electrode 3 consisting of anode 3a and cathode 3b is inserted into waste water 1 contg. mercury in a tank 2, and DC voltge is applied thereto, whereby the water is elctrolyzed. The mercury in the waste water deposits on the cathode 3b, after which it settles, is separeted and is recovered as valuable metallic mercury. If in this case the waste water is in an oxidative atmosphere, reduction assistants such as stannous chloride, ascorbic acids and the like are added, and if the mercury in the waste water exists as an insoluble component, oxidation assistants such as potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite and the like are added to accelerate the depositon of the mercury in the waste water on the cathode 3b as metallic mercury.
