PURPOSE:To decrease the length in the axial direction and to reduce the manufacturing cost, by circularing the cooling air by utilizing the self-ventilating actions of a rotor and a rotary commutator of an AC exciter, and omitting a ventilating fan. CONSTITUTION:A yoke ventilating hole 26 is formed in a stator yoke 18 of the AC exciter, and a ventilating path is formed in the direction of a stator by the gap in a stator pole 19 and the yoke ventilating hole 26. Furthermore, a spider groove 13 of the rotor and a ventilating path 25 in the direction of the diameter of the rotor are added and a first ventilating circuit is formed around the AC exciter. In said first ventilating circuit, the cooling air is circulated by utilizing only the self-ventilating action of the rotor 6. A ventilating hole 24 is provided in a rotary commutator 4, and a second ventilating circuit is formed around the commutator, and the cooling air is circulated by only the self-ventilating action of the commutator itself. An exhausting path 32 is shared by both ventilating circuits, and the air is introduced to an air cooler 12.
