Abstract

1388512 Cooling electric exciter windings KRAFTWERK UNION AG 20 Nov 1972 [20 Nov 1971] 53597/72 Heading H2A In a 3 Ph. main exciter whose armature incorporates a plurality of conductor bars 1, 2 portions 1<SP>1</SP> , 1<SP>11</SP> of which project as winding end turns from one end of the armature core and which are uniformly disposed in two layers around the outer region of the armature the portions in each layer are for a part of these length so bent together in pairs that the parts of each pair are adjacent each other and that the spacing between neighbouring conductor pairs is greater than that between bar portions at the end of the core, there being a fan 14 secured to the exciter shaft 10 for impelling cooling air into the spaces 5 between the conductor pairs. This construction is to improve the cooling of the end turns, and whilst as shown a single radial fan is provided the fan may alternatively be axial, or there may be two fans at one end or one fan at each end of the exciter. The shaft 10 has a star-shaped cross-section to define axial cooling ducts 11 leading through passages 12 between the armature core laminations 3 towards the field poles 13. A baffle 16 divides the fan output into two streams 17, 18, the former passing through passages 21 between the field poles 13 and the exciter housing 20 to both the remote end turns 22, and the ducts 11, and the latter passing to both the near end turns 29 and the ducts 11. In addition, openings 28 in the baffle 19 permit cooling of the field poles 13.
