Abstract
1,240,791. Cooling electric machines. SIEMENS A.G. 15 Jan., 1969 [20 March, 1968], No. 2483/69. Heading H2A. In an electrical machine, having a salient pole rotor 3 which, on rotation, will draw a cooling gas flow from outside the rotor and through the spaces between the salient poles 4, a non- magnetic screening means is disposed at one end of the rotor so as to cover, entirely or for the greater part, both one axial end of the spaces between the poles and the same axial end of the machine air gap 5. This is to reduce impulse exchange ventilation losses and as shown comprises a cylindrical cover 10 fixed to the stator 1 and an annular screen 8 fixed to the rotor hub 7, the cooling air being supplied through hub apertures 9 and discharged through stator core radial ports 6; the stator winding 2 is cooled by water passing through ducts. There may be a similar means at the other end of the rotor, and in other embodiments the screen 8 has fan blades (12), (14) on its outer or inner surface, the cover 10 has apertures (15) to permit cooling of the stator winding overhang (11), and the screening means may be stationary.
