Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively perform biological filtration, when sewage, night soil or the like is purified in an active sludge process, by cleaning the packed layer of active sludge-adhering carriers in a biological filter with bubbling gas and purified water after biologically treated.
CONSTITUTION: Raw water such as sewage or night soil is biologically treated. The treated water, while its dissolved oxygen rate is raised by air from the first gas-flow line 13 in a biological filter 7, is carried through a feed line 11, a packed layer 14 and a discharge ine 15, to catch contained turbid matters with the packed layer 14. Thus, the raw water is continuously biologially filtered. When the packed layer 14 is washed, bubbling is done by injection of air from the second gas-flow line 17, a switch valve 5 is opened to feed treated water, an excess part of active sludge and turbid matters adherent onto carriers in the packed layer 14 are removed from the carriers, and then the treated water is returned through a return line 16 into a conditioning vessel. After washing is completed, a gas-flow line 13 and a circulating line 20 are opened, and the residual treated water is circulated into the packed layer 14 after washed and subjected to biological filtration. Thereafter, the operation is turned into an ordinary continous biological filtration process.
